Jingchen, a young monk guarding the pagoda of Fotasi Temple in Chang'an, spends his days with Buddha's lamps and the moon—until the Lantern Festival, when Su Yang, a prime minister's daughter fleeing an arranged marriage, crashes into his arms. Clutching half a jade pendant, she's searching for a "past-life promise." Jingchen tries to send her away, but the light in her eyes disturbs his peace; Su Yang comes for refuge, yet falls for the "otherworldly" monk. But when the prime minister's men storm the temple with torches, and Jingchen's long-lost cinnabar mole reappears on his neck, they realize: this meeting is an "unfinished vow" prayed for 300 years before Buddha.
