Su Lu, a boatwoman in the Reed Catkins Marsh, rescues Xiao Bai, a gravely injured young man in white robes, only to invite disaster—her adoptive father, the old boatman, is killed by Prince Qi’s men. Su Lu then learns Xiao Bai is the crown prince framed for treason. To avenge her father and help Xiao Bai regain the throne, she transforms from a “wild girl of the reeds” into a heroine capable of investigating cases and leading troops, even discovering she is the orphan of the former National Guardian General. However, when Xiao Bai becomes emperor, he distances himself from Su Lu due to rumors that “a commoner is unworthy of being queen” and even plans to marry the prime minister’s daughter. Just as Su Lu is about to return to the marsh in despair, Xiao Bai visits her late at night with the late emperor’s edict: the late emperor had long appointed her as regent princess, and his coldness was merely to protect her from Prince Qi’s schemes. Finally, they eliminate the rebels together. Su Lu throws the regent seal into the marsh—what she wants is never the kingdom, but the young man who rode a white horse into the reed catkins that year, to stay with her by the fishing fires for a lifetime.
