In the 1980s Northeast China night market, Lin Dazhu, a grilled kidney stall worker, was dumped by his girlfriend for being poor. Then he met Su Wanqing, a Beijing lady who came to find her relatives—she held her grandfather’s old recipe book and said Dazhu’s grilled kidney tasted exactly like the 「Imperial Kidney」 her grandfather made for the warlord. It turns out Dazhu’s late grandfather was the head chef of the warlord’s mansion, leaving a struggling old restaurant 「Fulai Ju」 to him. Dazhu improved old dishes with his 「wild」 grilled kidney skills, while Su Wanqing used Beijing’s new ideas to attract customers. They went from bickering (local chef vs. city lady) to fighting the local bully who wanted the restaurant, and gradually fell in love. When the restaurant boomed, his ex came with her rich new boyfriend to show off—but Dazhu took out his marriage certificate with Su Wanqing. The so-called 「jiangshan」 (great cause) is just the little life with you, full of ordinary warmth.
