Li Zhao, the unfavored "good-for-nothing" Ninth Prince, is exiled to Cangwu County—a place so poor even rats won't stay—by the Crown Prince who sees him as a threat. He plans to live a lazy life, but the Crown Prince refuses to let him be: sending henchmen to steal mineral veins, fabricating treason evidence to destroy him. When the Crown Prince comes to arrest him for "rebellion," Li Zhao pulls out the ledger of the Crown Prince's embezzled military funds and sends him to prison. Meanwhile, Su Wan, a small doctor he meets in the fief, goes from despising him as "useless" to shielding him from knives and giving advice—they grow closer.
