Li Zhao, the unfavored "good-for-nothing" Ninth Prince, is exiled to Cangwu County—a place so poor even rats won't stay—by the Crown Prince who sees him as a threat. He plans to live a lazy life, but the Crown Prince refuses to let him be: sending henchmen to steal mineral veins, fabricating treason evidence to destroy him. Meanwhile, Su Wan, a small doctor he meets in the fief, goes from despising him as "useless" to shielding him from knives and giving advice—they grow closer.
