Ye Xiaotang, a lowly servant at the Imperial Academy, takes the blame to save her best friend and accidentally breaks into the training ground of Gu Jingshen—the infamous "Hell's Warden," a war god even the emperor fears, rumored to have slaughtered three cities with a gaze that could freeze hell. She hugs her head waiting for death, but Gu Jingshen yanks her into his arms: "Who gave you the right to touch my person?" What comes next is even more absurd: Gu Jingshen helps her uncover the truth about her sister's murder, teaches her to ride and fight, and even shoves the emperor's jade token into her hand: "If anyone in the capital bullies you, smash them with this." It's not until Ye Xiaotang catches Gu Jingshen staring at her childhood handkerchief—turns out he's not a "Hell's Warden" at all, but the little beggar she saved years ago. He'd faked his ferocity just to protect her. When enemies arrive, Ye Xiaotang grips the sword Gu taught her to use, watching his back as he stands in front of her. Suddenly, she understands: the "Hell's Warden" is just a man who spent ten years building an impenetrable wall around her.
