In the late Qing and early Republican era, Su Wantang, an apprentice in an opera troupe, is taken forcefully to the mansion of warlord young master Gu Zhaoting because of a plum blossom-shaped birthmark on her shoulder—rumor has it this mark is the key to the late dynasty’s imperial seal. Gu Zhaoting approaches her pretending to covet the seal, but gradually falls in love as he teaches her to read and shields her from bullets. Yet Su discovers Gu’s father is the “murderer” who wiped out her family.
