Just as he thinks he's about to live a "spoiled" life, the mechanical engineer says through tears: "The tattered blanket you gave me back then was the warmest light in the apocalypse." It turns out this "rise to power" is their way of saying—this warden, who's gentle enough to tuck them in, is the most worth protecting light in the end times.
