Emperor Murong Zhao of Dayan, fearing the military prestige of Marquis Yue Qingzhi who guarded the north, sent twelve gold edicts to recall him and forced him to retire. Half a year later, the Beidi tribe invaded, besieging the capital. Regretful, Murong Zhao went to Yue for help, only to find him waiting at the border with old troops—he never truly left. When the city fell, Murong Zhao took a fatal arrow for Yue and collapsed in his arms. She cried, "Those edicts weren't to drive you away. I feared you'd overshadow me, and more, that I'd lose my royal composure for love." Twelve edicts revealed suspicion and cowardice, but hid unspoken affection. In the end, she atoned with blood, earning Yue's belated "I understand."
