Lin Zhao, a street-smart spy, infiltrates the palace to gather evidence of the Female Emperor's "tyranny", but his disguise as a "clumsy guard" backfires repeatedly—he takes a poisoned hairpin for her, uncovers a concubine's plot, and even accidentally crashes into her arms. Gradually, he finds the Emperor is not ruthless at all—she covers him with a cloak at night and secretly gives him osmanthus cakes. When he's about to leave with the "evidence", the Emperor holds his undercover diary and smiles: "I've been waiting for your updates every day." It turns out she saw through his identity the day he entered the palace, but chose to play along—because she had fallen for him first.
