Modern struggling illustrator Su Xiaoman, while staying up late to meet a deadline, accidentally travels back to the 1970s and becomes Su Xiao'e, a "troublemaker girl" in a rural village in northern Shanxi—she's being chased by the village party secretary for secretly painting "bourgeois" portraits. At a critical moment, she's saved by Chen Mo, a newly demoted intellectual—this "bookworm" with glasses actually recognizes the "chiaroscuro" in her paintings at a glance. To prove painting isn't "evil," Su Xiaoman uses sketching to draw family portraits for villagers, designs New Year paintings to earn extra money for the brigade, and turns an abandoned cave into a "rural studio"; Chen Mo also goes from being an "academic supervisor" to a "partner" who secretly finds drawing paper for her and helps her hide from the village secretary. When Su Xiaoman's paintings are selected for an exhibition by the county cultural center, Chen Mo takes out an old photo—turns out he'd seen her paintings in a modern art museum long ago. This "time travel" is actually a mutual "search"?
