In the late Republic of China, a severe drought struck eastern Henan. Tenant farmer Chen Dagen lost his leased land and hut to the landlord, with nowhere to go—until his mute wife Xiuniang dragged him into the mountains. Though silent, Xiuniang grew drought-resistant medicinal herbs behind the hills and wove bamboo baskets that held twice the usual goods. Dagen learned from her: identifying herbs, weaving baskets, and sneaking to the county town at night to sell. But the landlord’s men intercepted them to rob. The couple trapped the thugs with Xiuniang’s bamboo trap, then cured the county apothecary’s dying mother with their herbs—opening a steady market. They earned enough to buy land, and even taught villagers to grow herbs and weave. The once-ridiculed "mute couple" became the village’s lifeline in the famine.
