Famine Year: The Steamed Bun Promise

In 1934, a severe drought struck. Xiao Sui, an orphan fleeing famine, collapsed at the gate of a dilapidated temple. Lin Zhiyuan, a poor scholar guarding the temple, clutched half a steamed bun—his food for three days—and finally gave it to her. Xiao Sui woke up to see him chewing grass roots, so she handed him her mother’s silver hairpin: “This exchanges for your bun—I will marry you.” But the next day, Xiao Sui was separated by refugees. Lin Zhiyuan carried the hairpin and searched the famine-stricken areas for three years. Later, he heard a familiar cry at a bun shop: “Hot buns, just like the taste from the temple!” Turning around, he saw Xiao Sui in a blue apron, holding a steaming bun with tears: “I’ve saved for three years, finally able to steam a basket for you.”
