After working in the city for three years, Xiu Lian, a young girl from northern Shaanxi, planned to save enough money with her paper-cutting skills to escape an arranged marriage. But she was forced back home by her father to marry the village party secretary’s son in exchange for a betrothal gift for her younger brother’s wedding. Back in the village, she met Chen Yang, a cultural and creative designer who gave up a high-paying urban job to return home. The two accidentally discovered the cultural and creative value of the village’s lost paper-cutting art and original local grains. Facing conservative old customs and helping villagers find new ways to increase income, Xiu Lian and Chen Yang developed feelings for each other while working side by side, and found their own life direction on the loess plateau.
