Su Jiaojiao, the most neglected illegitimate daughter of the General's Mansion, is suddenly crowned Empress by the Empress Dowager's decree to "ward off misfortune." Before entering the palace, everyone expects her to fail—the Emperor is cold-hearted, concubines are ready to attack, even her maid packs secretly to flee. But on her first day, the Emperor kneels to rub her swollen ankle, the Empress Dowager cooks lily congee for her, and the arrogant Princess Chang gives her a precious jade hairpin. When the Prime Minister accuses her of "lacking virtue," the entire court defends her—turns out, she saved the young prince (now Emperor) with a tanghulu ten years ago, cured the Empress Dowager's old illness with herbs, and helped the Princess Chang retrieve her husband! Now everyone is competing to spoil her, but Su Jiaojiao is confused: "I just wanted to live lazily as Empress—why is everyone more eager than me?"
