Xiao Tang was picked up by Uncle Jiu at the age of three and raised in an old house in the mountain stream. He taught her to recognize herbs and avoid mountain mists, saying, "This mountain is your root." At 17, Uncle Jiu suddenly disappeared, leaving only a note: "We shall never meet again in this life." Ten years later, Xiao Tang became the leader of an archaeological team and accidentally unearthed the Tomb Guardian Contract under the old house——it turned out Uncle Jiu was a hereditary "tomb guardian" for the ancient clan's spirits, and each guardian must "return to the void" (die) to accompany the spirits when they turn 40. When she returned to the mountain stream with the contract, Uncle Jiu stood under the old locust tree at dusk, his temples fully white, and smiled: "I didn't leave. I was just waiting for you to grow up, brave enough to send me on my last journey."
