Shen Yan, a hostage prince from Xiliang, fakes illness to avoid marrying Yan Zhaoning, Empress of Beiyan. Unexpectedly, Yan moves into his residence claiming to “take care of her sick fiancé.” She shields him from political schemes by day, brews ginger tea to coax his medicine by night, and even takes an assassin’s sword for him. Shen soon discovers the rumored bloodthirsty empress is the little beggar he saved years ago—her “clinging” is just a decade-old crush. Just as he’s ready to face his feelings, Xiliang orders him back for a political marriage. This time, he’s the one doing the clinging.
