In the 22nd year of the Republic of China, sycamore leaves swirled in the bleak autumn breeze by the Jiangnan dock. Lin Wanxing stood on the moss-covered stone steps for three hours, clutching a silver hairpin carved with mandarin ducks, waiting for her fiancé Gu Yanchen. Instead of her lover, she received a divorce note and a steamship ticket for an overseas political marriage. Their three-year romance was sacrificed for family interests. Heartbroken, she threw the hairpin into the river and boarded a ferry away from the dock, disappearing forever. A year later, Gu Yanchen defied his family to search for her, only to find an unfinished poem in their former cottage, ending with the line "Desolate Autumn".
