Da Qiang and Xiao Yu, odd-job workers in the city, pooled their savings to buy a nearly broken-down second-hand motorcycle to make the 4,500-kilometer ride home for New Year’s Eve dumplings. They risked falling into an ice hole to save a suicidal girl, exposed a health product scam targeting the elderly with secret recordings, and drove a sick single mother to the hospital overnight—even giving away their last 500 yuan. But a blizzard blocked the mountain road, leaving their bike stranded. In minus ten-degree weather, they pushed the bike all night in tattered coats, fingers too frozen to light a lighter. Just as they were about to collapse, the elderly man they’d helped earlier arrived with villagers. They didn’t make money, but gained stories; no train tickets, but rode a legend that made the whole village cheer them on.
