Infamous as the town's walking disaster, Liu Sanniang can't escape her curse—chickens die in her coop, crops wither in her fields, even stray dogs trip over her shadow. When rumors spread that she brings misfortune to all around her, an angry mob storms her home with torches. Defiantly, Sanniang collapses onto the threshing ground: 'Just kill me then!' But as she gives up, miracles erupt: withered paddies burst with grain, drought-stricken wells overflow, and a wealthy stranger kneels before her sobbing, 'Mother! That pickled jar you buried twenty years ago... it held an imperial jade seal!'
