In the bustling 1920s Shanghai Bund, Su Mengqing, a cabaret dancer at Paramount Ballroom, holds two dreams: to be a top dancer and save money for her sick mother in the countryside. She navigates among tycoons, journalists and gangsters, only to find the "honest" rich man she met is part of a business arranged marriage scheme—her savings are embezzled and her mother passes away. Amid shattered neon lights, Su transforms from an innocent dream chaser to a tough, cold woman. Finally, through her old lover's sacrifice, she learns the stolen money helped more girls in trouble: her dream is broken, but her heart finally awakens.
