Lin Wan, a modern soft furnishings designer, moves into an attic in an old alley. Every night at ten, she spots a man in a moon-white long gown practicing calligraphy on the opposite balcony—but neighbors insist that room has been empty for thirty years. Even more eerie: an old blood-stained notebook suddenly appears in her drawer, filled with lines like “When the moon is full, I’ll keep the appointment with Wanwan.” Following the notebook’s clues to a Republican-era antique shop, the owner hands her an old photo: a girl in a Western dress is tiptoeing to put a hairpin on the calligrapher—and the girl’s face is unmistakably Lin Wan.
