Mute single mother Lin Yuehua supports her piano prodigy daughter Xiaoyu by selling pancakes. When Xiaoyu qualifies for an international competition but can't afford the entry fee, Yuehua works multiple jobs until collapsing. Xiaoyu discovers rejected orchestra offers among her mother's belongings - revealing Yuehua was once a renowned pianist who abandoned her career to raise her. At the finals, Xiaoyu performs her mother's original composition, as Yuehua cries silently in the audience, signing 'I love you' with trembling hands.
