Grandma, who lives alone in the old house, suddenly has frequent eerie dreams—dreaming of herself collapsing under the old clock in the main hall, of her granddaughter Xiaotang being tied up by red ropes and unable to move, and of the old locust tree in the yard shedding red tears. Xiaotang notices Grandma's odd behavior: rummaging through boxes for old letters, calling distant relatives late at night, even taking Grandpa's urn from the ancestral hall back to her bedroom. She suspects Grandma is haunted by something “unclean” until she finds Grandma's medical record—advanced lung cancer. It turns out the three eerie dreams are Grandma's “conspiracy”: she wants Xiaotang to return to the old house and find the wooden box Grandpa buried under the locust tree. Inside are the unposted letters Grandpa wrote all his life, each saying, “I’ll take Ajuan to see the sea when I retire.” Grandma’s “oddness” is just her way of giving the love she’s hidden for decades to her granddaughter in her final days.
