In 1959, Chen Shougen, a carpenter from a rural area in southern China, sells his family's heirloom carpentry tools to take his wife Guixiang and two kids to the county town—all for his son to attend the "modern school" there. But their first day in the city is a disaster: the dilapidated temple they rented is evicted by the neighborhood committee, their son is called a "country bumpkin" at school, and Guixiang weeps for home. Chen doesn't give up—he waits outside the county furniture factory at midnight, using his "mortise and tenon绝活" to fix the factory director's old wardrobe, earning his first wage and a temporary house from the committee. But bigger tests come: the son skips school to pick cinder for extra money, Guixiang secretly sends savings to the sick mother-in-law back home... Can this family put down roots in the city?
