Shen Niannian has waited three years in her riverside hometown for her fiancé Gu Yanqing, who left with the imperial army to fight on the frontier. Neighbors all claim he died in battle, but she refuses to believe a word of it. Every day, she sends quiet wishes to the spring breeze, certain he will come home. Then on a freezing winter day, a stern-faced general moves into the neighboring estate—his build and bearing are identical to Gu Yanqing’s, yet he acts as if he has never met her.
