Zhou Dahai, an illiterate father, loses his daughter Xiaotang to suicide after she’s falsely accused of theft and shoving a clerk at a supermarket. Online bullying and school isolation break her. Zhou is imprisoned for accidentally hurting the supermarket owner while seeking justice. In jail, he learns law from scratch—starting with recognizing characters, studying old legal books he found, and filling three worn notebooks with copies. After release, he gathers evidence: tampered surveillance footage, audio of the clerk’s perjury. In court, he faces a top Harvard-grad lawyer who mocks his illiteracy. But with Xiaotang’s diary and his hand-copied legal notes, Zhou exposes the truth: the clerk framed Xiaotang to cover his own theft, and the boss altered the footage. Finally, the court vindicates Xiaotang. Zhou holds her photo, tears falling: “Dad finally cleared your name.”
