Lin Xiaoman, orphaned, lives in a run-down hut on the outskirts of the capital, selling her homemade osmanthus-scented胭脂 (rouge) to make ends meet. But her exceptional skill angers the capital’s top rouge shop, which smashes her stall and cuts off her business. Desperate, she mistakes Third Prince Shen Mo—who’s incognito investigating corruption—for a “down-and-out nobleman.” To use his “elegance” to break into the upper-class market, Xiaoman forces herself to act gentle, serving tea and “seducing” him to get close.
