In the Great Jing Dynasty, the 16-year-old new Emperor Yuan Zhao is controlled by Marquis Weiyuan, who even dictates his marriage. Gu Changchuan, the national preceptor who was convicted of "colluding with enemies" and disappeared three years ago, suddenly receives a secret letter from the emperor: "Invite the national preceptor back to court." But when he returns to the capital in disguise, he finds the former young prince has hidden his sharpness, his old case is linked to the death of the emperor's mother, and Marquis Weiyuan's spies are watching every move in the palace. As the fog of power lifts, Gu realizes this "invitation" is a life-or-death game the emperor has staked his life on—and a bond of life and death beyond monarch and subject.
