Lin Xiaochuan, a poor young man, lives in a run-down apartment. His next-door neighbor Zhou Hongying, a shrewish woman, picks on him daily—taking his clothesline, piling garbage at his door, and even cursing him as a 'poor loser who doesn’t deserve this place.' The gentle Lin can only endure, until his childhood friend Jiang Hao comes to stay—Jiang just left the mental hospital, seeming crazy but full of tricks. When Zhou bangs on the door yelling again, Jiang drags a small stool to the doorway and 'competes in craziness': for every curse from Zhou, Jiang sings nursery rhymes, dances a silly twist, and even takes her hidden pickle jar as a 'family heirloom.' Zhou breaks down more and more, finally covering her head and begging: 'I’ll never bother you again!' Lin looks at Jiang, who’s squatting on the ground eating a braised egg, and suddenly realizes this 'crazy friend' knows better than anyone how to deal with 'meanness.'
