He tunes her flute to perfection and pulls out a tattered half-score of *The Peony Pavilion*, vowing to fix the "unfinished ending" together. They pore over the score under the eaves, practice arias, and Lin Wan finally feels the opera come alive. But on the premiere night of the full play, Shen Shiyu vanishes—only the completed score and a note remain: "I found my master's whereabouts; I have an old debt to settle."
