In a remote village in the 1980s, Little Fu, an orphan rejected by the entire village, clutches a patched cloth bag and publicly decides that the poverty-stricken Chen's son will be her "father". The Chen family, once the poorest in the village, gets a turnaround the day Little Fu enters: the long-dormant stove lights up, the bedridden mother can stand with a wall the next day, and their barren field sprouts plump rice ears. As their life gets better, villagers come to snoop out of jealousy, but no one knows that the sudden good fortune hides the orphan's unspoken obsession and a mysterious connection.
