Wang Zhao, a modern overworked office worker, dies from staying up late and wakes up in 1962 at a production and construction corps in Northwest China—a place his grandfather described as 'building canals with steamed buns' and where he meets Chen Yujia, the 'Flower of the Corps' who died young in his previous life (seen in old photos). Armed with modern agricultural knowledge, he tries to increase crop yields but is scolded by the old company commander as 'unorthodox'; he wants to prevent Chen Yujia's tragic death while saving a comrade, yet is called a 'jinx' for his 'precognition'. Anxious to rewrite fate, he and Chen Yujia go from 'annoying each other' to 'carrying hoes side by side', silently falling in love. On the sandy construction site, Wang Zhao not only 'wrestles' with the era's limitations but also catches the warm steamed bun Chen Yujia hands him—a simple, heartfelt love between two young people across time.
