In the early Republic of China, intellectual Juan Sheng fell in love with Zijun, a woman who declared “I am my own,” bonded by their shared new ideas. The once bright-eyed Zijun faded into silence under the weight of daily trivialities, and died in melancholy amid her family’s coldness. Holding the half-embroidered handkerchief she left, Juan realized at her tomb: Their love didn’t end for lack of affection, but for failing to survive life’s smallest, sharpest cuts.
