Lin Wan, a craftsman restoring ancient sheng (a traditional Chinese wind instrument), finds Ashuang—a mysterious girl wrapped in frost flowers—in an old alley. She can "hear" the past sealed in the sheng but has no memory of herself. They stumble upon a broken sheng carved with "The sheng's melody is unsteady, the frost flowers are ephemeral". As they restore it, the story of Gu Zhao (a Republican-era musician) and his lover Ashuang—separated by war—emerges: Ashuang's soul has clung to frost flowers for a century, waiting for Gu Zhao's "I'm back". But Ashuang's frost is fading, and Lin Wan must help her fulfill the promise before she disappears. Yet his growing affection for Ashuang overlaps with Gu Zhao's obsession—Is this a cycle of fate, or a chance to break the "ephemeral" curse?
