In 1972, at Dongfeng Brigade in northern Anhui, Lin Xiaoyue (Qu Yue), a city-bred educated youth, arrived with a Xinhua Dictionary determined to open a night school—only to be dismissed by Chen Haoxuan (Qiu Haoxuan), the production team leader: "Reading is less useful than cutting pigweed!" They bickered daily over "ideal vs. reality"—she thought he was too rustic, he mocked her bookish naivety. But when she fell ill at midnight, he climbed two mountains for herbs; when his experimental field was destroyed by rain, she led educated youths to replant overnight. Just as they were about to confess their feelings, Lin's father was rehabilitated and urged her to return to the city for college. Between the long-awaited city life and the "foe" who shared her youth, her choice holds the most painful regret of a generation's youth.
