Lin Chuan, a city investment banker, returns to his hometown to save his family’s bankrupt farm, planning to sell it quickly and go back to Beijing. But he’s hounded by Su Xiaotang, the village’s famous “Chili Flower”—she confesses her love with home-grown chili peppers at the village entrance, stuffs her homemade chili sauce into his suitcase, and even uses a hoe to protect him when he’s surrounded by debt collectors. At first, Lin Chuan thinks she’s “too pushy” and avoids her like the plague. Until one late night, he sees Su Xiaotang squatting in the farm, mending his grandfather’s old fence, holding a note with organic vegetable buyer contacts—turns out she’s been secretly finding ways to revive his farm. Only then does he realize that Su Xiaotang’s “impertinence” is the hottest sincerity hidden in the village’s daily life, and his heart, once frozen by the city’s coldness, has long been warmed by her chili-flavored passion.
