Lao Zhou and his wife, who run a small restaurant in a Northeast Chinese town, are stressed about saving for their son’s wedding house down payment. Right before New Year, though, old neighbors keep asking for help—Aunt Wang can’t afford her birthday banquet, Uncle Zhang needs care after hospitalization, and the frozen pear seller breaks his leg. Lao Zhou complains, “This New Year’s ruined,” but still uses the down payment for Aunt Wang. His wife pawns her gold bracelet for Uncle Zhang’s care, and their son gives his betrothal money to the pear seller. Just when they’re stuck for New Year’s Eve, neighbors return the money, and their restaurant booms thanks to their “kindness first” reputation. As they eat dumplings, Lao Zhou says: “Money can be earned back, but kindness can’t be missing—that’s the true Northeast New Year.”
