Lin Xiaoman (Wei Yifei) and Chen Tiedan (Qu Xing), who grew up clinging to the walls of an old alley in Northeast China, one is a “fierce fashion planner” returning from Shanghai, the other a “living fossil of grilled skewers” guarding the alley’s barbecue stall. Their reunion after eight years comes from the demolition of their old house—back then, Xiaoman waited in tears with her acceptance letter for Tiedan to take her to the airport, but he missed the appointment to help a neighbor grandma get emergency care, and they lost contact. Now, the demolition order arrives: Tiedan wants to keep the childhood memories in his stall, while Xiaoman needs to hit her company’s “old town renovation KPI.” From clashing over “you’re tearing down my stall” and “I’m reshaping your memories,” to digging up the glass marbles and half-written love letters at the bottom of old boxes, they realize those unspoken words—“I was scared you’d leave” “I waited for you”—have long simmered into the hottest care in the smoke of grilled skewers.
