Modern office worker Zhou Zhou, haunted by the unspoken regret of her grandfather's death, accidentally binds to the "Heartbreak System" and travels back to 1959—a time when her grandfather was still a tough, unemotional steelworker. Her mission? Make the man who "never cries" shed a tear, or stay stuck in the past forever. But when her attempt to please him with chocolate gets labeled "speculation", her mushy love letter is crumpled into a ball, and she secretly saves food coupons for the osmanthus cake his late wife loved, she uncovers the tenderness beneath his hard exterior: he writes unsent letters to his wife at night, gives his only steamed bun to a neighbor's kid, and even hid his terminal illness from Zhou Zhou in the present to avoid missing her wedding. Just as she finally makes her grandfather's eyes redden with his late wife's old scarf, the system suddenly alerts: "Mission incomplete"—turns out, the one who really needs to "break" is Zhou Zhou herself, and her decade-long misunderstanding that "Grandpa didn't love me".
