Yu Lei, a down-and-out convenience store owner, has kept a pot of chuanchuan (spicy skewered food) simmering for three years—it was his ex-girlfriend Lu Yuan’s favorite. One day, Lu Yuan, who vanished three years ago, suddenly becomes a “returning guest,” buying a portion of chuanchuan every day on time but never mentioning her abrupt departure. Yu Lei pretends to be indifferent yet secretly notices her red-rimmed eyes and the medical report in her bag; Lu Yuan uses “passing by” as an excuse but quietly fixes his leaky roof and fends off debt collectors for him. When the misunderstanding of “his infidelity” is uncovered and the lie of “terminal illness” is exposed, they realize: the so-called “old guest” has always been the lover who never left.
