Zhu Lei is the most popular sugar figurine seller in Yangzhou, with deft hands and a sweet tongue. He harbors a secret affection for A Ruan from the neighboring tofu shop, dreaming only of saving money for a small shop and living a simple life. However, his mother, a widow for twenty years, has “bringing honor to the family” etched into her soul. She sells her dowry silver hairpin to fund his imperial examination journey and even kneels to beg him: “Son, our family’s dignity depends on you.” Zhu Lei sets off reluctantly, only to find his exam quota stolen by the county magistrate’s son. To his shock, he learns his mother has long known he doesn’t want to take the exam—she just fears others will mock him as “worthless.” Standing at the exam hall gate, with his sugar figurine melting in his hand, Zhu Lei faces a choice: his mother’s love hidden in stubbornness, or the ordinary life he craves. Which path will he take?
