In 1960s rural China, Wang Yunqing, a farmer’s wife, lives in a wood shed with her cute son Xiaomaodou while waiting for her husband Yuan Shi’ang, who works far away. One day, Xiaomaodou finds a hole in the shed wall leading to the back alley of a modern supermarket—where there are discarded fresh vegetables and expired-but-edible bread! Mother and son secretly bring these “treasures” back to the village to support their family, but they must constantly avoid neighbors’ gossip and the village committee’s inspections. When Yuan Shi’ang suddenly returns home, he mistakenly thinks his wife and son are hiding “shameful things”—until he catches Xiaomaodou munching on modern potato chips with crumbs all over his face. The family then guards the secret together, using modern “waste” to turn their lives into the warmest light in the village.
