Empress Shen Zhaoyi falls into despair right after ascending the throne: her power-hungry relatives plot to seize control, border rebels have taken three cities, the treasury is so empty she can't even pay the army, and all officials either turn a blind eye or betray her. At this moment, Ye Zhaojin, the new top scholar, always comes over with a smile: “Your Majesty, don't panic—I have a plan.” He uses a “robbing Peter to pay Paul” trick from the streets to raise military salaries, a “lure the snake out of its hole” scheme to take down the relative clique, and even pulls out a trade map he's hidden for three years to make the enemy retreat when they're at the city gate. But just as the empress starts to see him as her “rock,” she finds his old handkerchief—it's the token she gave a little beggar ten years ago. It turns out all those “tons of schemes” are just a boy's ten-year effort to weave a “protection net” for his savior.
