Three years after Empress Su Wanzhao ascended the throne, the court is rife with hidden powers. She takes Shen Yan, the orphan of a former general's family, as her "top concubine", showing favor on the surface while secretly monitoring him. Shen Yan endures humiliation to investigate the truth behind his family's massacre, but gradually discovers another side of the empress—she hides her sharpness to give him medicine when he's seriously injured, and quietly covers him with a cloak on a rainy night. When Shen Yan finally gets evidence that "the empress is the mastermind of the massacre", he uncovers a bigger conspiracy: the real culprit is a powerful minister who wants to overthrow the imperial power. From mutual calculation to gradual affection, how will this game starting with "revenge" finally break through in "sincere love"?
