In 1980s Kaoshan Tun Village, 16-year-old Fubao (Wang Xinling) is obsessed with clay—her mom scolds her for "wasting time," the village chief says "girls should learn knitting," and even her childhood friend Zhao Hui frowns, "Stop messing around." But she shapes the old locust tree's texture into clay, turns Granny Zhou's old silver hairpin into a tiny "hairpin tower," and carves the village ox so lifelike it seems ready to moo. When the county cultural center sends someone on a bike to collect her works, and the news "Fubao's clay figures tell stories" spreads far and wide, those doubts finally turn into cheers at the tea stall: "Our Fubao's going to be an artist!"
