Liang Wenjin and Xu Xiaoli’s 5-year-old son Xiaoyu disappeared mysteriously in a mall a decade ago, sending the couple on a journey across half of China to find him. Over the years, they’ve been scammed out of their savings, labeled “crazy” by relatives, and even clashed bitterly over their search methods—Liang clings to every vague lead, even if it means bankruptcy; Xu almost gave up in despair, until she found a loophole in the surveillance footage from the day Xiaoyu went missing (a stranger in a hat had touched their son). When they finally track down a teenager matching Xiaoyu’s age and appearance, they stumble into a cross-provincial human trafficking ring—and realize the “accident” ten years ago might have been a premeditated plot.
