Chen, a skilled artisan running a popular Jiangnan-style cake shop, takes the quick-witted but impetuous Ming as his apprentice, intending to pass down his family’s secret cake recipe. Seeing how prosperous Chen’s business is, Ming sneaks the core recipe away when Chen is out purchasing ingredients, wanting to start his own business and make a fortune fast. But he only copies the surface procedures, completely failing to understand the subtleties like temperature and proportions in the recipe. Misled by speculators who sell low-quality ingredients, he ruins his brand within months, goes bankrupt and falls into debt. Desperate, Ming returns to Master Chen’s home, only to find that Chen had expected his mistake, left a backup plan and is willing to teach him the right craft again.
