In Chanming Alley beside Beijing's Bell and Drum Towers, Lin Xiaoman guards 'Xiaoman Bookstore', a legacy from her grandfather. She makes a living selling old books and homemade tanghuoshao (sugar pancakes) — a promise to her grandfather to 'keep the alley's warmth'. Her life is turned upside down when Lu Jingshen, a returning architect, arrives with a plan to transform the old lane into a 'cultural and creative business district'. The two clash fiercely, but through repeated conflicts, they uncover a hidden past: Lu Jingshen is the 'little Jingshen' who once snuck into the bookstore to read as a child. And the secret in his plan? He wants to help Xiaoman save the bookstore. As the renovation order comes, the demands of old neighbors, Grandpa's old diary, and their unspoken feelings weave into a warm tug-of-war about 'guardianship' and 'rebirth' under the morning bells and evening drums of the Bell and Drum Towers.
