Lin Xiaoman tried to secure a scholar spot for her cousin Zhang Aniu, who had failed the exam three times, through connections. However, Aniu ran away from his arranged marriage on the exam day, forcing Lin to disguise herself as a man and take the exam in his place. She originally planned to write something perfunctory, but after witnessing the people being oppressed by corrupt officials, she couldn't help writing a policy essay criticizing current social ills. Unexpectedly, the chief examiner was deeply impressed, and she became the top scholar! To make matters worse, the emperor wants to marry his daughter to the top scholar, and Aniu's fiancée comes to the door with betrothal gifts demanding an explanation. Lin has to hide her female identity, clean up Aniu's mess, and deal with the emperor's forced marriage. A farce of "a fake scholar becoming a real top scholar" unfolds, turning the capital into chaos!
