Lin Xiaoman (played by Zhang Jiayingzi), a “double loser” who just got laid off and cheated on by her boyfriend in the big city, returns to her hometown in despair to find her grandma on New Year’s Eve. When the last braised pork is served, grandma takes out a rusty iron box — inside are letters from her parents: it turns out they didn’t abandon her; they died in a car accident saving grandma, and grandma hid it for 20 years for fear she’d hate her. This “last dinner” is grandma’s final effort to put all the love she’s hidden for a lifetime into Xiaoman’s bowl.
